«Mi dimetto di mia libera volontà», ha affermato in una intervista telefonica al St. Louis Post-Dispatch, che pubblica anche il testo della lettera alla polizia in cui Wilson scrive di sperare che le sue dimissioni consentiranno alla comunità di riprendersi. «Mi è stato detto che la continuazione del mio impiego potrebbe mettere a rischio i residenti e gli agenti di polizia di della città di Ferguson, ed è una circostanza che non posso permettere», ha scritto Wilson nella lettera, cinque giorni dopo che il Gran ha stabilito che non deve essere processato per l'uccisione del diciottenne afroamericano Michael Brown. «Per ovvi motivi - precisa poi nel testo - ho voluto aspettare fino a dopo la decisione del Grand giurì prima di prendere ufficialmente la decisione di dimettermi». Tuttavia, ha poi detto allo stesso giornale, dare le dimissioni «è stata la cosa più dura che abbia mai dovuto fare».
